Many habits that man calls harmless are, in fact, discreet forms of abdication. Abdication of one's own will, discipline, and presence. My dear Olavo used to say that inner disorder is always a tolerated choice. When a man lives reacting to stimuli, constantly seeking distraction and avoiding the discomfort of growing, he feeds what is weakest within himself. Abandoning these habits is not repression, it is hierarchy. It is killing the beta that formed out of comfort and making room for the alpha that is born when a man governs himself.
