The phenomenon of pilgrimages quickly became a prominent spiritual and cultural axis of Europe, and Santiago a major pilgrimage center, along with Rome and Jerusalem. The Way was a true "highway of knowledge." It is the most celebrated medieval codex of the Jacobean pilgrimage.
