The specter of the Wild Woman still stalks us day and night. No matter where we are, the shadow chasing us is decidedly four-legged. We all yearn for the wild. There are few accepted antidotes for this burning desire in our culture. We have been taught to be ashamed of this kind of aspiration. We grow our hair long and use it to hide our feelings. The Wild Woman archetype, and all that lies behind it, is the benefactor of all painters, writers, sculptors, dancers, thinkers, healers, seekers and finders, for they are all dedicated to invention, and this is the Wild Woman's primary occupation. Like all art, it is visceral, not cerebral. It can track and run, summon and repel. It can feel, disguise, and love deeply. It is intuitive, typical, and normative. It is utterly essential to a woman's mental and spiritual health.
