The specter of the Wild Woman still stalks us day and night. No matter where we are, the shadow that stalks us is decidedly four-legged. We all yearn for the wild. There are few accepted antidotes to this longing in our culture. We have been taught to be ashamed of this kind of longing. We grow our hair long and use it to hide our feelings. The Wild Woman archetype, and all that lies behind it, is the benefactor of all painters, writers, sculptors, dancers, thinkers, healers, seekers and finders, for they are all in the business of inventing, and that is the Wild Woman’s primary occupation. Like all art, she is visceral, not cerebral. She can track and run, summon and repel. She can feel, disguise, and love deeply. She is intuitive, typical, and normative. She is absolutely essential to a woman’s mental and spiritual health.
